46.6 !!!!!!

Unbelievable!! I connected at 46.6 kbps this morning! I have never connected at any speed greater than 45.2 before - praise be to the mighty internet gods - please give me a sign to let me know what I did right to get this blast of speed!

Note to Bell (and Rogers for that matter), this is sarcasm. I hate dialup. I can actually feel the life force being drained from my body as I sit and wait for something (anything) to happen on my computer.

I am currently intending to give up on normal methods of connecting to the internet and buying an EVDO router modem and connecting that way - when EVDO is available in my area - which I am expecting to be early in 2007. Until then, hopefully 46.6 will become less rare...

Sad to read that you are on dial-up. Hopefully DO will alleviate your pain. Have you thought of Inukshuk? Is there WiMax coverage planned in your area? Since you mentioned DO service, I have a question regarding DO at Bell - Why doesn't my RAZR V3c, although capable of it, have access to the DO channels in Ottawa, and stays on 1x data for all the internet browsing I do? Are the DO channels reserved for people on a data plan as opposed to mobile internet plan?

The odd functionality you mention around Ottawa might be due to going into and out of EVDO coverage - as a test try turning your phone off while in EVDO coverage and then turning it back on - if it works after this procedure than it is the "border crossing" that is causing the problem. EVDO coverage should improve greatly next year, so hopefully this is a short-term problem for you. As for me, nothing available in my area at the moment except satellite ($800 to start plus ~$55/month for ~250kbps uplink), 1xRTT (only 2-3 times dialup, not worth it for full use), or dialup. EVDO is coming next year which is near-broadband speeds, so I will use that.
