Need power, can't wait any more

Power is still out. On my way to Canadian Tire in Orangeville for an inverter and transfer switch for the water pump and fridge (and fish tank) - lots of trees down, we got off lucky at our place. Heard on my solar-powered-wind-up radio that someone died in Peterborough. Pretty intense. The storm was short, but fierce (sort of like one of my Dad's buddies...).

Just bought a 3kw generator ($800) and going back for a "powerhub" that has built-in switchovers and batteries ($450+tax). Plan is to wire the fridge and water pump into the powerhub permanently and plug the powerhub into the wall. This will address short outages. Then install a cable from the powerhub to the generator where I can unplug the powerhub from the wall and plug it into the generator for extended outages (bypassing the need for a generator transfer panel at $200). Overheard a guy at Home Depot saying that he called the power company and was told could be 3-4 days before they get everything fixed.

Delayed blote - mobile blog problems
Fridge and fish tank are now running on the generator and it seems to be working okay...so far... Good to know that the fish can last at least 18 hours in an outage, their position on the critical power list just got bumped... Now I need to work on the transfer wiring for the water pump (this is critical since I need to flush the toilets - I know TMI...).
